Nasi (Mendes), Gracia

Nasi (Mendes), Gracia
(c. 1510-69)
Portuguese marrano stateswoman and patroness. She was born in Portugal (as Beatrice de Luna), and married the banker Francisco Mendes. On his death she went to Antwerp in 1537. Fearing religious persecution, she escaped to Venice in 1545, but she was denounced and imprisoned there. Released in 1549, she moved to Ferrara, where she was known as a Jewess and became a patron of writers. She also controlled an underground organization which rescued marranos from Portugal. In 1553 she went to Constantinople, where she became known as Gracia Nasi. Joined by her nephew Joseph Nasi, she became the leader of Turkish Jewry. She built synagogues, helped fugitive marranos, and began a project for the colonization of Tiberias.
